Canterbury Language Academy is a young, dynamic
and growing English language institution which
is proud to be a part of the Canterbury Education
Group. Our management, academic and administrative
staff has had extensive experience working with
international students in tertiary and vocational
courses and is committed to providing a supportive
environment in which to study.
To support the high quality of our
English programs, we provide students with a developing
curriculum, advanced language software, interesting
teaching methods and a caring approach. Every
student is treated as an individual learner and

Our new campus is located close
to Central Railway Station, Central Bus Services,
Darling Harbor, Chinatown and the centre of Sydney
City. Students will find major universities and
their libraries in walking distance and a beautiful
park and public swimming centre directly opposite
the College where lunch and sport can be enjoyed.

Our course objectives are to provide students
with the most important language skills and study
strategies. All levels focus on the development
of these and cover areas such as skills for academic
study, social and cultural values, and learning
in an Australian education system.
Each program has been designed around the combination
of textbooks and materials prepared by teachers,
as well as the most recent resources used in language
teaching. Assessment is continuous and is also
based on a combination of exams and assignments.
General English Course

Our General English course is intended
for students wishing to learn English for a variety
of different purposes. All four macro-skills of
Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening will
be studied and an options program allows students
to pursue their interests in the areas of work,
study and leisure.
There are no requirements for entry to this course.
Students will be tested on arrival and placed
in the level which is most suitable for their
current proficiency.
Students can begin their course on any Monday
and the four levels are offered in 10 week blocks.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
Delivery of the course will emphasize
adult learning styles. Teaching and learning strategies
will take into account different learning needs,
educational backgrounds and preferred learning
styles of students. Course delivery methods will
include classroom instruction, Computer Assisted
Language Learning, individual group projects,
class presentations and discussions, study visits
and self-paced learning.
Students will be assessed through regular progress
testing, teacher assessment and self assessment
through a weekly review session.

Advanced English for Academic
Study (EAP)
10 – 40 weeks 25 hours per week
Canterbury Language Academy Advanced
English for Academic Study (EAP) program is designed
to prepare international students with the English
necessary for success in Australian tertiary education.
The course concentrates on those aspects of English
which students will meet in colleges and universities
and develops these in the context of such areas
as IT and Business.
Students will be exposed to teaching methodologies
currently used in Australia which may be different
from those that they are familiar with in their
home education system. With a strong research
and project focus, the course aims to develop
students’ English language skills within
the Australian cultural context.
A stimulating electives program
provides variety and interest whilst ensuring
that students receive their full 25 course hours
as face to face teaching.
Each level places an importance
emphasis on the development and practice of Study
Skills including:

• Listening an Note Taking
• Library and Research Skills
• Academic Vocabulary Extension
